One of the best pieces of advice I always give clients and friends when designing their children’s bedrooms and playrooms is to keep in mind they won’t be young forever. I suppose that’s why we prefer to keep children’s spaces colourful and eclectic.
We all seem to go through the stage where we think everything needs to match to a theme. Try not to get caught in that trap. It’s great if you can mix and match different styles, old and new, modern and vintage together. When your child asks if they can paint their room their ‘favourite colour’ don’t be too quick to say yes. What is their favourite colour today will certainly be different tomorrow and god knows you don’t want to keep repainting the room.
I finally surrendered to my daughters nagging and agreed to allow her to stick posters over one wall. This way when she’s sick of them she can change them over or remove them all together. Perfect, now we’re both happy. For boys maps are great on the walls- both fun and educational!
In the earlier years with soft toys and timber blocks through to the latter teenage years you quickly realise that you can never have enough storage. There always seems to be so much stuff! Gifts from birthdays, prizes, collectables, hair accessories, computer and phone accessories, books, letters, cards, trophies, school uniforms, shoes, clothes and more! So make shelves, wardrobes, drawers and storage boxes high on the priority list.
