Nestled in Albert Park just south of Melbourne’s CBD is this truly beautiful home designed by Stephen and Carole Whiting. As you would expect from a duo like this, who together are the force behind architecture and interiors firm Whiting Architects, the contemporary addition remains sympathetic to the original Edwardian home.
The extremely detailed and seriously considered interior is enough alone to make you want to live here, but with Albert Park Lake, the South Melbourne Markets, and Melbourne’s CBD all a stones throw away, this family home is unbeatable.
Steven and Carole built the home for their family of four, including their two daughters and two border collies. For the last 20 years they have lived in the area, and with Steven and not far away, they naturally nested in the same area again.
Together Steven and Carole run architecture and interiors firm Whiting Architects – Steven is the head Architect and Carole is Creative Director, as well as founder and curator of Y10 Store. Known for their contemporary and innovative approach to design, their Albert Park home is another one to add to their incredible portfolio.
When Steven and Carole found the home the attraction was not only because of its location, but the old Edwardian character of the original building. Featuring all that you could imagine from a double fronted, red brick Edwardian, Carole and Steven retained the original three bedrooms and one bathroom, adding on a double story space at the back. The personality of the addition comes from the ‘barn’ like structure featuring a pitched roof, which was inspired by a typical child’s drawing of a house.
A focus on internal views and a series of private spaces and nooks throughout were key in making this home feel private, considering its location in such a dense suburb. The living and kitchen space however, extends views into the back yard, thanks to a pair of steel framed vintage French doors – a key feature in creating the contemporary ‘barn’ personality.
