Places & Spaces | Beach House in Merricks, Victoria
Today we have a very cool Australian beach house that we have been waiting eagerly to share with you. Tucked away on Victoria’s rugged coast line, this character filled house is the holiday home of my ever so stylish and long time friends.
Nestled in Victoria’s beautiful coastal town of Merricks, this home really is one-of-a-kind. Designed predominantly by the owners themselves, the boho and slightly retro design is is true to the character of the owners.
Somewhat reminiscent of a 50s houseboat, the starting point for the design came from a house that the owners spotted in Wallpaper Magazine many years ago. “The photo we saw was of the outside of a modern one storey timber home with a breezeway so we built our two storey holiday home around the idea of that photo.” With that in mind, the design quickly evolved to become a perfectly planned home that gives enough space and privacy, even when the four bedroom home is filled with family and friends. Downstairs two wings, which accommodate guest bedrooms on one side and family bedrooms on the other, are split by a wide open breezeway. Upstairs is accessed by a glass enclosed spiral staircase that punctuates the main core of the building. The main living area is a beautiful open-plan space offering unspoiled views from the beach to the surrounding farm land.
While the architecture is one element that makes this design look like it belongs within the rugged landscape, the interior finishes is what makes this house truly unique. An amazing rainbow filled colour palette comes from the punchy 50s fabrics – a refreshing contrast to the stark white walls. The kitchen alone is worth mentioning, with open shelving, mint green joinery, which rings true to the owners ambition to create a design that embraces practical utilitarian traits.
The garden too is just as intriguing. Native coastal plants create somewhat of a secret garden with garden paths leading to whimsical surroundings. At the end of a well trodden path is the sweet little cubby house, built by the family on weekends, is complete with it’s very own wood boat!
While the owners enlisted the help of builder Nick Luke, the beauty of this house comes from the way the house has naturally evolved and extended, proof of their creative flair.
