Places & Spaces | Swedish Summer Cabin in Sydney

An interior that can take you across the other side of the world just by stepping through the door not only involves a well-resolved design but a clear intention from the beginning. Product and Industrial Designer, Frag Woodall’s latest concept renovation, ‘The Swedish Summer Cabin’ in Sydney swiftly jets you across the globe to summertime in Sweden with his sympathetic, pared back art deco inspired ‘weekend project’.

The 2-bedroom apartment in Kensington, Sydney, embraces cohesive conceptual development and refinement showcasing a tightly bound renovation that boasts the natural features of this little home away from home.

This one man project, which took a complete nine months to finish, meant that Woodall was “both the designer and building services” ensuring that the space took full advantage of the Scandinavian design principles. Woodall cleverly executed an effortless combination of simplicity and minimalism, while still maintaining a highly functional space. And true to that Scandi style, he took on a reduced monochromatic colour palette leaving the space feeling fresh, welcoming and unpretentious.  The distinct style flows seamlessly throughout the opened planned interior allowing it to really emphasise the weightlessness of elements within the household.

Frag’s comprehensive understanding of materiality and shape gave him an advantage to execute a disciplined design that is genuine to that of a monochromatic Scandinavian scheme. Ensuring that the apartment embodied his vision and remained authentic to his style, beautiful and simple features like as the rich Baltic Russian pine wall-paneling in the bathroom reflect such warmth. The hero of the space is perhaps the sliding re-machined door, which brings a collaboration of France and Italy together, embracing that global experience. This, long with the lightweight, interchangeable kitchen wall hanging cabinetry that is propped on a peg rail, shows the continuity of the Swedish influence marked in each room.

Frag’s DIY home design captures the true essence of Scandinavian design and fully embraces that monochromatic palette which would make anyone feel at home in this perfectly Scandi style cabin!

‘An element of my design style is the notion of evoking people’s curiosity and causing them to take a second look. I like design to be playful, random or unexpected. To me it is very important in design that things are both witty and whimsical. To evoke fond memories, trigger thoughts, design is like a stepping stone to imagining.’ – Frag Woodall
