Tips & Trends: Designing Your Kitchen

Kitchen Trends & Tips

With so much inspiration and choice available we always like to simplify things and in doing so have outlined the 5 key trends we see in kitchen design at the moment. These trends were further reinforced last week during Milan Design Week. A handy checklist never goes astray so we have also listed the best tips for your kitchen.

Kitchen Trends

Integrated appliances – We love the clean, simple lines of integrated appliances such as integrated fridges and dishwashers, although we often prefer to stick with a semi integrated dishwasher with the display panel visible at the top- it’s so much easier to use!

Mini Kitchens - Smaller sized kitchens are becoming increasingly more prevalent. The Boffi Mini Kitchen is a perfect example of a smaller sized kitchen without compromising functionality and storage.

Flush joinery pulls – Handless joinery creates clean lines for contemporary styling in kitchen design

Feature lighting- Slimline pendant lights, task lamps  attached to shelving and track lighting  are all nice options in the kitchen to provide sufficient lighting for food preparation and ambience.

Induction cooktops – Induction cooktops  rapidly transfer the energy needed for cooking directly to the pan, so the cooktop surface remains cool. Not only is this method of cooking the safest, it is the most energy efficient with impeccable heat control. Highland’s FC Range induction cooktops FC range have square zones increasing the usable cooking surface area, enabling the majority of the cooktop surface to be used as an induction zone and the bridging feature lets the user combine two induction zones from the top to the bottom of the cooking surface.

Kitchen Tips

Storage - Allocated organized storage spaces & systems

Benchtops - We like Corian®  and Laminates  for bench tops but don’t steer away from natural stones thinking that they are high maintenance. Appreciate stones qualities and allow it to age and patina naturally over time. There’s no need to be precious!

Tapware – combine pull out taps with a good quality boiling hot & filtered water tap

Washing up - We always locate the kitchen sink in the middle of the benchtop with the dishwasher to the right and bins to the left–  it makes ‘scrape then rinse then stack’ so much easier!

Above bench shelving – A shelf above the bench top is a great idea for display, feature lighting  & accessible storage.

Island Bench – This is a favourite and a key trend which is commonly seen in new builds and renovations. Island benches  allows for plenty of storage, preparation area and a great entertaining space.

Lighting – A the kitchen becomes more and more the focal point of the home where we all spend so much time, sufficient lighting is essential for both food preparation and social ambience.  Maximise your natural light with full plenty of windows or skylights.

Colour - Don’t be afraid of colour in the kitchen. If bright colours are not your thing try a neutral palette or soft subdued tones such as light greys, dusty pastels and charcoals.

Paint – There are many white paints out there to choose from, so it can sometimes be overwhelming when you don’t know which one to choose. Make your selection based on your entire material palette. Warmer whites such as Porter’s Paints Limoges will suit darker, richer timbers where as a ‘whiter’ white such as Porter’s Paints Absolute White  will suit your lighter timbers such as limed oak and pine. We have our favourite selection of interior paints on Share Design!

Pantry – Keeping your small appliances and food out of your main kitchen area, keeps clutter to a minimum. A pantry can be simply be a small walk in space for food or a larger area where you can allow for a second sink, extra fridges and more storage. Great for those who like to entertain! If your kitchen space doesn’t allow for a pantry try incorporating an Appliance cupboard, or as some call it a ‘breakfast bar’ for your toaster, kettle, mugs, saucers and breakfast bowls.

Waste – Make sure you give ample consideration to a good system for waste. We have sourced the best Hafele system for recycling, general waste & compost (if that’s your thing)

Powerpoints - Locate ample power points for appliances on bench tops. See our favourites from Clipsal.
